Graphic Arts Projects 

All entries should be labeled according to these instructions:

1. YOUR NAME SHOULD NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE ON THE PROJECT.

2. It will be required that a 3x5 inch note card bearing the following information be attached to the project: title/description of the art work, category, source, and a brief description of the project.

Each chapter may enter an unlimited number of projects; however, there will be a limit of five projects per individual student. A student may enter more than one project in a single category, however, he or she may not win more than one 1st-, 2nd-, or 3rd- place award in that category. The student who made the project must be present at the convention. Projects must represent original work completed in the past year; projects, therefore, may not be entered more than one year. All projects are judged on the basis of creativity/originality, degree of skill, design and color, accuracy/authenticity, adherence to classical theme, neatness, correct English or Latin usage, adherence to rules, and the overall effect.

ART

            The artwork must have a recognizable classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches. A student is limited to the submission of one entry per medium.

            Do not enter groups of pictures as they cannot be judged fairly against single pictures. All entries must be backed with a stiff matte board. Entries may be matted; WOOD OR METAL FRAMES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. FRAMED PICTURES WITH GLASS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Watercolor

            The watercolor should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Oil or Acrylic

            The oil or acrylic should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Pencil (black or colored)

            The pencil should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Charcoal

            The charcoal should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Pastel/Chalk

            The pastel should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Ink (may include block printing)

            The ink should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Colored Ink

            The ink should be matted and have a classical theme. Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches.

Mixed Media

            The mixed media should be matted and have a classical theme.Pictures (excluding the matte) may have a minimum size of 8 x 11 inches and a maximum size of 16 x 20 inches. It may be 3-D.

HANDICRAFT

Mosaics

            Mosaics should be made on a firm background. Whatever type of tesserae are used, the entire space should be covered, including the background area, but only by one layer of rice, rocks, etc. Do not build up or overlap. Do not leave large spaces between the tesserae. Tesserae should be approximately the same thickness to give a fairly level finished product. They should be individual, separately colored pieces, and they should be firmly attached. Lines drawn to place tesserae should not show, and there should be no lines painted on the surface of the finished mosaic.

Sculpture

            Sculpture should be handmade only – no molds. It should be a figure of some sort, either done in the round or a relief cut from flat surfaces.

Pottery

            Pottery should be handmade only – no molds. It should be a container of some sort (vase, jar, urn, sarcophagus, etc.)

Large Models

            Large models should be larger than one cubic foot. One cubic foot means that the model measures more than 12-15 inches in any/all dimensions. Large models are expected to be more accurate and intricate in detail than small models. Models should be actual three dimensional representations of objects, not flat pictures.

Small Models

            Small models should be smaller than 12-15 inches in any/all dimensions. They should be actual three dimensional representations of objects, not flat pictures.

Handmade Dolls

            Only handmade dolls may be entered; no purchased kits or patterns should be used without major changes to show creativity. Delegates may enter a single doll or a group of dolls;dolls may be monsters as well as recognizable historical or mythological characters. The workmanship and neatness of dolls are essential aspects considered by the judges.

Decorative Stitching

            No kits or patterns should be used without major changes. Embroidery, weaving, and sewing are included in this category. No textiles should be framed in glass. Work should be neatly done, flat, not puckered, with even and uniform stitches, and with no knots or dark threads showing through from the back. In cross-stitch, all the stitches should cross the same way.

Other Textiles

            No kits or patterns should be used without major changes. Batiks, banners, and t-shirts with glued-on or painted letters or designs should be entered in this category. The same basic rules apply as for decorative stitching.

Jewelry

            Jewelry should be handmade only. Workmanship and neatness are essential aspects considered by the judges.

Militaria

This category is for hand-made replicas of classical armor and related military equipment. Examples include shields, helmets, chain mail, footwear, standards, etc. For safety reasons, replicas of offensive weapons such as swords, arrows, spears, and ballistas are not permitted.

Miscellaneous

            Miscellaneous projects are those which do not fall into other art or handicraft categories. Student may enter only one miscellaneous project.

POSTERS, CHARTS, MAPS

Promotional Posters

            Posters must be 22 x 28 inches. They PROMOTE. Posters must sell an idea, a motto, a slogan, or the JCL convention. They must show relevance to Latin, Greek, JCL, or the classical past. The poster may be used to attract membership into JCL. Please remember not to use any copyrighted characters or ideas. Photographs may be used but keep in mind that if used, they must be a part of the poster. Otherwise, photographs should be entered in the photography contest.

Charts

            Charts must measure 22 x 28 inches. They TEACH. Examples are family trees, military battle formations, plans of buildings, etc.

Maps

            Maps must measure 22 x 28 inches. They SHOW WHERE. They may vary in media but cannot be three dimensional in nature.

CARTOONS AND GREETING CARDS

Cartoons

            Cartoons may be either a single panel or a strip with a classical theme. The entry must be original and must not be larger than 3 x 8 inches. BEWARE OF PLAGIARISM. Do not simply borrow an idea from a cartoon you have seen. You must not use any copyrighted character or idea. All entries must be backed with a stiff matte board. NO COMPUTER GENERATED MATERIALS ARE ALLOWED.

Greeting Cards

            Greeting cards must be 5 x 7 inches. They may be serious or humorous and written for any occasion. They must be original with a classical theme and use only Latin words. Do not use any copyrighted characters on your card! NO COMPUTER GENERATED MATERIALS ARE ALLOWED.A translation of the Latin used should be on the 3 x 5 inch card.

PHOTOGRAPHY

            Photographs must be single pictures not larger than 8 x 10 inches. The photo should have a recognizable classical subject or relevance that is apparent without accompanying text. IT MUST BE THE SOLE AND ORIGINAL WORK OF THE ENTRANT. All entries must be accompanied by a short caption indicating the particulars of the subject and content. The entry must stand on its own merits; this is not an essay contest. Photographs may be matted but not framed.  

1. Traditional Photography: Students must list unusual technical details or special effects if used either in the taking or the printing of the photograph. Color added after the photograph has been printed does NOT qualify as a special effect. Entries may be either black and white or color. Only traditional photography will be accepted. Certain photographs are unacceptable: photos taken from the internet, CD ROM, or other electronic sources, slides, copies made from commercially produced slides or prints, including copies of pictures in books, museums, computer produced photos, etc.

2. Computer Enhanced Photography: Computer-enhanced photography differs from traditional photography in that it entails things done to a photograph after it is taken and printed or loaded into a computer (if a digital camera is used).This may include changing the color, changing the background, superimposing one picture over another, adding distortions or shadows, etc. via a computer. NOTA BENE: These photographs must still be printed on paper that is photographic weight. All pictures used must be the work of the photographer. Whatever process is used must be noted on the 3x5 card. It may be matted but not framed.

            Criteria for judging are classical theme, technical execution, content of photo, composition, and visual impact.
